5 Critical Maintenance Checks to Avoid a Roadside Emergency

Back to Blog

As a mobile diesel mechanic with over 15 years of experience on the I-70 corridor, I’ve seen firsthand how a missed maintenance check can turn into a costly, time-consuming roadside breakdown. For a trucker, downtime isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s lost money.

The good news is that many of the most common causes of roadside emergencies are preventable. By incorporating these five critical maintenance checks into your regular routine, you can significantly reduce your risk of getting stranded and keep your rig running smoothly.

1. Fluids, Fluids, Fluids (Oil, Coolant, and Fuel)

It sounds basic, but you’d be surprised how often fluid issues are the culprit in a breakdown. Your engine’s fluids are its lifeblood.

•Engine Oil: Check your oil level daily. Low oil can lead to catastrophic engine failure. Look for any signs of leaks on the ground where you’re parked. Also, pay attention to your oil pressure gauge while driving. A sudden drop is a major red flag.

•Coolant: An overheating engine is one of the most common roadside emergencies. Check your coolant level regularly and inspect hoses for any cracks, leaks, or soft spots. A blown coolant hose can leave you stranded in minutes.

•Fuel System: Regularly drain your fuel water separator to prevent water from contaminating your fuel and damaging your injectors. In the winter, use an anti-gel additive to prevent your fuel from gelling up in the cold Kansas weather.

2. Tire Pressure and Condition

Your tires are your only connection to the road. A tire blowout on a semi-truck is incredibly dangerous and can cause a major accident.

•Tire Pressure: Use a quality tire pressure gauge to check your tires (including your trailer tires) at least once a week, and always before a long haul. Improperly inflated tires build up heat, which is the #1 cause of blowouts.

•Tread and Sidewalls: Visually inspect your tires for uneven wear, cuts, bulges, or any objects embedded in the tread. Uneven wear can be a sign of an alignment issue that needs to be addressed.

3. Brake System Inspection

Your brakes are arguably the most important safety system on your truck. Don’t take any chances with them.

•Air System: Listen for audible air leaks when the truck is parked and the engine is off. Check your air pressure gauges to ensure they are building up to the correct PSI and not dropping too quickly.

•Brake Adjustment: Regularly check your brake adjustment to ensure all brakes are applying evenly and have the proper amount of travel. This is a critical part of your pre-trip inspection.

4. Electrical System and Lights

A dead battery or a faulty light can easily put you out of service during a DOT inspection.

•Battery Terminals: Keep your battery terminals clean and tight. Corrosion can prevent your batteries from charging properly and can leave you with a no-start situation.

•Lights: Do a full walk-around of your truck and trailer to ensure all lights are working correctly—headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. A simple burnt-out bulb can lead to a ticket or a failed inspection.

5. Belts and Hoses

The rubber components under your hood are susceptible to wear and tear from heat and vibration.

•Serpentine and Fan Belts: Inspect your belts for any signs of cracking, fraying, or glazing. A broken belt can take out your water pump, alternator, and other critical components, leaving you dead on the side of the road.

•Hoses: Check all your hoses (coolant, air, and power steering) for any signs of cracking, swelling, or leaking. A failed hose can cause a major fluid loss and a sudden breakdown.

By taking a few minutes each day and week to perform these checks, you can save yourself hours of downtime and hundreds (or even thousands) of dollars in repair and towing costs. Stay safe out there!
